"One of the best collections of its kind in Britain"
Housed in an ancient 16th-century malt barn with a collection of adjoining buildings, the Usk Rural Life Museum holds over 5,000 exhibits gathered by local enthusiasts over more than fifty years. Each object tells the story of how people lived, worked, and weathered the seasons in Monmouthshire's rural communities.
The collection spans approximately 100 years — from 1850 to 1950 — covering Victorian farm life through to the mid-twentieth century. You'll find everything from the smallest hand tools and domestic items to grand agricultural machinery and vintage tractors.
We are a registered charity run entirely by dedicated volunteers. Alongside the museum, we house the Usk Visitor Centre, offering local information and friendly guidance about the wider area.
From the intimacy of a Victorian cottage to the heat of a working forge — our specialist collections bring the past to life across a sprawling set of historic buildings.
We warmly welcome school parties, heritage groups, and organised visits by arrangement — any day of the week, including days when the museum is otherwise closed.
Our volunteer guides can tailor the experience to your group's interests, whether that's agricultural history, the Victorian era, or wartime life.

Set within the characterful historic museum buildings, it offers a unique and atmospheric setting for any gathering.
Hire the RoomBessie is one of the museum's most beloved characters — a reminder that behind every artefact is a living story, and behind every farm was a community of people and animals who worked the land together.
Ask our friendly volunteers about Bessie when you visit. She's become something of a legend among our regulars, young and old alike.
Come and visit →Our volunteer guides carry decades of personal knowledge about rural Monmouthshire life. Many grew up on farms or in villages where these very tools were in daily use — bringing authentic, living memory to the collection.
